Position Summary: This Pilot Plant (Innovation Center and Process Engineering Manager) will effectively lead, manage and oversee all activities in the 8,000 sq.ft. Pilot Plant. Primary responsibility for effectively planning, organizing, scheduling and executing pilot plant trials supporting product and technology development, while ensuring compliance with all required Company policies and procedures.  Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the infrastructure and functionality of the Pilot Plant inclusive of, but not limited to, facility oversight, general and preventative maintenance, utility management, capital improvement, permitting, and warranty issues.
  • Manage the operations of the Pilot Plant inclusive of, but not limited to, the inventory, receipt, and release of raw materials and plant supplies, test run support, management of contract service groups, development, monitoring, and reporting of metrics tracking operational performance, oversight of shipping and receiving of Pilot Plant and R&D related activities
  • Set up annual budget and execute commitments to meet the current and future needs in collaboration with client groups the Pilot Plant supports.
  • Manage the technical activities of the Pilot Plant inclusive of, but not limited to, product development and application, pilot trials, process optimization and new process implementation, and training of R&D team members in functional tasks necessary to perform Pilot Plant duties.
  • Plan in collaboration with the Product Development team and other relevant functions to ensure efficient scheduling and execution of pilot plant trials, optimal use of resources, and completion of tasks in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for maintaining complete records of all Pilot Plant trials as per the record retention policy; ensure that batch records and other Quality documents are faithfully and timely executed, reviewed, and retained as permanent records.
  • Train and oversee compliance with Quality Assurance policies and procedures that relate to the Pilot Plant.
  • Ensure compliance with USDA guidelines, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), all Company policies and procedures relevant for the pilot plant operation.
  • Lead and manage Safety, Health and Environment programs as well as Food Safety, Quality & Hygiene for the Pilot Plant (GMPs, LOTO, HACCP, OSHA).
  • Participate and contribute to cross-functional teams. Interface on project implementation teams, including assistance with technology hand-off from development through start-up and providing operational training as required.
  • Establish close relationships with other internal functions (Marketing, Food Safety, Quality & Regulatory, and other plants).
  • Travel as necessary.

Job Requirements

Experience and Education Requirements: 

  • BS Degree in Chemical or Food Engineering or related discipline.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience (Operations/Production management; R&D environment a plus).
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in the Pilot Plant technology, including engagement in the development and evaluation of new technologies.
  • Knowledge of USDA and FDA guidelines, HACCP, GMPs,
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/priorities. Understanding of support functions including budgeting, planning, safety, quality and human resources. Computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and business management systems such as SAP. Pro-active/self-starter Learning Agility 

Training Competencies Safety

  • Annual completion of OSHA required safety training.
  • Annual completion of Food Safety overview training
  • HACCP Certification
